Sierra de Albarracín: Guided Mushroom Foraging in Teruel
The Sierra de Albarracín is our neighbour to the east, in the province of Teruel, Aragón. Cross the provincial border from the Alto Tajo and you are in a high, cold range of wide pine forests and mountain meadows, part of the same massif: the Iberian System. This is where the River Tagus is born, at Frías de Albarracín, in the Montes Universales.
Why it is good for mushrooms
Besides the limestone typical of these mountains, the Sierra de Albarracín has outcrops of red sandstone, known locally as rodeno, and quartzite, which give more acidic soils. That mix of soils, together with the altitude, explains much of its mushroom richness.
We come here mainly to forage, around the villages of Bronchales, Orihuela del Tremedal and Guadalaviar. In autumn we look for the pine and meadow species; in spring, for Hygrophorus marzuolus, which appears as the snow retreats, and the other spring mushrooms.
Permits
Foraging here is regulated and requires a permit. In our guided outings the permit is included in the price. If it ever had to be paid separately, we would tell you before you book.
We do not publish specific spots, out of respect for the forest and for the people who live from it.
Never eat a wild mushroom without checking it with an expert. Correct identification is the forager’s responsibility.
How our outings work
- Small groups: 2 to 12 people.
- Real learning: identification, dangerous look-alikes, responsible picking and the ecology of fungi.
- Dates set by the forest: mushrooms fruit one to three weeks after heavy rain, so we confirm dates a few days ahead rather than months in advance.
- What to bring: walking shoes, warm clothing, a basket and a knife.
