The Deer Rut in Spain: Guided Evening in the Alto Tajo

From mid-September to late October, red deer stags (Cervus elaphus) roar to hold territory and attract hinds. In Spanish it is called the berrea, and hearing it at dusk in the Alto Tajo Natural Park is one of the great wildlife sounds of Europe. The peak usually falls in the second half of September.

We take you out at the right time of day to listen and watch, with binoculars and a spotting scope, keeping the distance the animals need.

• Where: Alto Tajo Natural Park (Guadalajara), central Spain, about a 2-hour drive from Madrid.
• What to wear: muted colours, warm layers and quiet footwear. Evenings get cold quickly.
