The European bison (Bison bonasus) is the largest land mammal in Europe. It was hunted to extinction in the wild and brought back from a handful of surviving animals. In the Alto Tajo, in the province of Guadalajara, central Spain, a herd now lives in semi-freedom near El Recuenco, within a rewilding project run by Rewilding Spain.
Watching a bison graze in a Spanish landscape of pines and oaks rearranges what you thought you knew about European wildlife. We explain the animal, the project and the debate around it, with binoculars and a spotting scope.

- Where: El Recuenco, Alto Tajo (Guadalajara), about a 2-hour drive from Madrid.

- Dogs: not allowed on wildlife-watching outings.
The animals live in a large enclosure in semi-freedom, so sightings cannot be guaranteed.
