Przewalski’s Horses in Spain: Photo Safari in the Alto Tajo

The Przewalski’s horse (Equus ferus przewalskii) is considered the last wild horse on Earth. It never became a farm animal, it disappeared from the wild in the 20th century and it survived only in zoos. Today a small herd grazes freely in the Alto Tajo, in the province of Guadalajara, central Spain, as part of a rewilding project run by Rewilding Spain.

On this photo safari we take you to see them with binoculars and a spotting scope, and explain what rewilding actually means: bringing back the large grazers that once shaped these landscapes, opened clearings and reduced the fuel that feeds wildfires.

Practical information

• Duration: about 3 hours.
• Group: 2 to 12 people.
• Where: dehesa of Villanueva de Alcorón, Alto Tajo Natural Park (Guadalajara), about a 2-hour drive from Madrid.
• Guide: a local nature guide who lives inside the Natural Park, all year round.
• Pick-up: available from your accommodation in our plug-in hybrid van.
• Dogs: not allowed on wildlife-watching outings.

These are free-ranging animals, so sightings cannot be guaranteed. We keep our distance, never feed them and let the horses set the pace.
