We are El Observario, a small ecotourism company in central Spain. We live in Peñalén, a village of fewer than 100 people inside the Alto Tajo Natural Park, in the province of Guadalajara, and we guide wildlife watching, stargazing, mushroom foraging and interpreted walks in three neighbouring mountain territories of the Iberian System.

This is not the Spain of beaches and crowds. It is limestone gorges, old pine and juniper forests, a river that cuts through canyons, some of the darkest skies in Europe and almost nobody around. Two hours from Madrid, and most visitors have never heard of it.

What you can do with us

  • Przewalski’s horses: a photo safari to see the last wild horse on Earth, in a rewilding project. 3 hours, from €20.
  • European bison: Europe’s largest land mammal, in semi-freedom. 3 hours, from €20.
  • Stargazing: a guided night with a telescope under Starlight-certified skies. 3 hours, from €20.
  • The deer rut: the roar of red deer stags, from mid-September to late October. 3 hours, from €25.
  • Mushroom foraging: learn to read the forest, permit included. 4 hours, from €30.

We also run interpreted walks through gorges and river canyons, birdwatching for vultures and the elusive Dupont’s lark, and experiences around the old trades of these mountains: river log drivers, resin tappers and shepherds.

Where we are

We guide in three neighbouring territories, all within the Iberian System:

  • Alto Tajo Natural Park (Guadalajara), part of the Molina-Alto Tajo UNESCO Global Geopark.
  • Serranía de Cuenca, with the Beteta Gorge and the source of the River Cuervo.
  • Sierra de Albarracín (Teruel), where the River Tagus is born.

Driving times: about 2 hours from Madrid and from Zaragoza, and 2.5 to 3 hours from Valencia.

How we work

  • Small groups, from 2 to 12 people. Often you will be the only ones out there.
  • A local guide. Soraya Espinosa lives here all year round: qualified nature guide, environmental educator, Starlight monitor and mushroom interpreter. She speaks English.
  • Pick-up from your accommodation in our plug-in hybrid van, if you prefer not to drive.
  • Wild animals. We never feed or chase them, and we tell you honestly that sightings cannot be guaranteed.

When to come

  • Autumn: the deer rut in September and October, then mushrooms and autumn colour.
  • Winter: tracks in the snow, black truffle, vultures courting on the cliffs and the longest nights for stargazing.
  • Spring: full rivers and waterfalls, migrating birds and spring mushrooms.
  • Summer: kayaking on the Tagus, early-morning walks and warm nights under the Milky Way.

How do I get there without a car?
Public transport is very limited in this area. If you arrive by train or bus at Molina de Aragón, tell us and we will look at the options with you.

Can we book for a specific date?
Yes. Write to us with the dates you have in mind and the activities you are interested in, and we will put a plan together.

Can children come?
Yes. Under-5s are welcome, although they usually enjoy these outings less.
